This topic describes the importance of fossil fuels and the products of burning and includes aspects of energy transfer. This leads on to a discussion of the impact that burning fuels has on the environment and the ways of controlling different classes of fires.
Fire
- needs fuel
- needs heat
- needs oxygen
- gives off (hydrocarbon fuels), carbon dioxide and water
- oxygen is used in welding machines
Fossil Fuels
- made by pressurisation and heating of fossiles
- coal, oil and natural gas are fossil fuels
Uses of fuels
- Gas - Methane - can be used in specially adapted cars as a fuel source
- Petroleum (Gasoline) - in cars
- Residue (Bitumen) - for candles
Methane
- can be obtained by decay of waste materials
- can be used as a fuel
Exothermic: Gives out energy
Endothermic: Takes in energy
Pollution
- oxides of some non-metals cause pollution. e.g nitrogen oxide and sulpher dioxide.
- Atmospheric pollutants - carbon monoxide and lead
note: you will need more extensive notes on fossil fuels effect on the environment
