Crude Oil: Is a mixture of hydrocarbons

Molecular Formula

C4H10

Graphical Formula

Grahical Formula

  • Carbon atoms can join up in chains, branched chains, or rings. (Note: I may add the images for these)
  • Physical properties of hydrocarbons, depends on teh size of its molecules

Saturated and Unsaturated

  • Saturated means it can carry a full number of hydrogen atoms possible - alkane
  • Unsaturated means it cannot carry a full number of Hydrogen atoms possible, due to its double bond - alkene

Bromine Water

  • Alkenes are more reactive, so they react with bromine water, and turn it colourless
  • Alkanes don't, and bromine water stays the same colour

Alkanes

  • Molecules belonging to the alkane family have no double bonds
  • they are saturated
  • Uncreactive
  • Formula: CnH2n+2

First Five Alkanes

  • 1.Methane
      • CH4
  • 2.Ethane
      • C2H6
  • 3.Propane
      • C3H8
  • 4.Butane
      • C4H10
  • 5.Pentane
      • C5H12

    Alkenes

contain carbon to carbon double bond

    unsaturated

are reactive (one of the double bonds is weak)
