States of Matter
Solid
- fixed shape
- fixed volume
- particles held together by strong forces
- particles can vibrate on the spot
- particles cannot be compressed together
Liquid
- Fixed volume
- Takes the shape of its container
- particles are fairly close moving randomly
- liquids cannot be compressed
Gas
- No fixed volume
- no fixed shape
- takes the shape of its container
- particles are far appart
- gasses diffuse rapidly
- can be compressed

Atomic Theory
Atom: Smallest particle of matter that can take in a chemical reaction
Element: a substance made up of a single type of atom
molecule: a group of two or more atoms bonded together. Can be the same element/atom.
Compound: a substance made up of two or more elements chemically combined in fixed proportions. The elements cannot be seperated by physical means.
Mixture: two or more substances mixed together in any proportions. Componants keep their properties. They can be seperated by physical means.
