Division of Labour

Advantages:

-          More goods and services can be produced because workers become specialists in the jobs they do. Repeating the same operation or task increases the skill and speed of the worker which results in larger output levels

-          Full use is made of everyone's abilities. It provides a greater chance for people to be able to do those things at which they are best and which interest them most

-          Time is saved because a person does not have to switch from one job to another because he does not do different tasks or operations. Time spent on training a labourer will also be less because the person needs to be trained on just one operation in the entire production process

-          It allows the use of machinery because division of labour will cause labour to be divided up into specialist tasks. The output levels will be very large. The use of machines becomes worthwhile

Disadvantages:

-          Work may become boring

-          Products are all the same (mass production)

-          People become dependant on each other

-          Workers may feel alienated
