The Hungarian Uprising - 1956
In 1953 Stalin died, Hungarian leader Rakosi was overthrown by Nagy (overthrown by Rakosi - 1955)

Reasons for uprising
- Censorship
- Secret Police (AVO)
- Soviet troops in Hungary
- low standard of living
- Religion suppressed - Hungarians religious
- limited, Soviet only education
- Rakos' brutal regime
What happened
- Rakosi overthrown - Nagy replaced him
- Nagy set up a government with non-communists
- end of one party rule
- removal of all Soviet troops
- Hungary withdrew from the Warsaw pact
- This was too much for Khruschev
- Red army invades Budapest
- Kills 30,000 Hungarians
- Nagy arrested and executed
- Janos Kadar put as president (pro-soviet)
- Red army invades Budapest
Why did Khruschev take this action
- Other Eastern European countries may want to do the same (freedom)
- China advised this action
- Western powers distracted by Suez crisis
- Khruscehv didn't want to show weakness
Western Response
- Public opinion was in favour of the Hungarian's
- Distracted by Suez
- USSR vetoed UN, calling for removal of Soviet troops
- USSR wouldn't cooperate
Results
- Hungary
- 200,00 refugees fled to the West
- Nagy killed
- Kadar rules, pro-soviet, no reforms
- Eastern Europe
- Knew freedom was not possible, even if they stayed communist
- East-West Relations
- USSR blamed West for supporting Nagy
- West knew that Soviets were still brutal (keep control of Eastern Europe)
- West powerless behind the Iron Curtain
- West more determined to fight Soviet expansion
