9-10^th November 1938

Jewish shops and synagogues were destroyed
400 synagogues and 7500 shops were destroyed
91 Jews killed and 30,000 sent to concentration camps
It was a systematic plan made to seem spontaneous
Police were told not to interfere, only where non-Jews were endangered were they to help

Reasons for Kristallnacht (Crystal Night)

There was a power struggle between the leading Nazis
Goebbels was out of favor, because he had an affair with a Czech actress
He suggests Crystal Night to Hitler, saying it will satisfy the hatred of the Nazi hard liners
Hitler agreed, and used it as an excuse to speed up the removal of Jews
Goering and Himmler did not support the plan and were disappointed

Effect of Crystal Night

Jews had to pay for damages, even though they were the ones being attacked (1 billion Reichmakrs)
No Jews were allowed in school
Remaining Jewish businesses were confiscated
Jews had to add Sarah (female) and Israel (male) as their first names
