- Gertude Scholt-Klink - was head of Nazi's Women's Bureau. She had no political power.
1933 the Nazis wante mothers
- to reverse decline in birth rate
- propaganda campaign to encourage motherhood and large families.
- The Honour Cross for the German mother
The Type of Mother
- did not work
- aryan, no heels, no makeup
- cooked certain meals
- used leftovers
- dressed with home produced goods
- behaved in a certain way e.g. no smoking
- brought children up as loyal Nazi's
1937 - Women Needed To Work
- men joining army, women needed to take their place
- compulsory 'duty year' with no pay
- women still had to have children
- divorce was allowed only if the couple could not have chilren
- Lebensborn - women could donate a baby (SS men)
What was life like for Women?
- 1930's stressful - pressure to bear children.
- For many it was good though
- Women's employment increased (they were cheaper)
- Their wages were rising
- women were keen supporters of teh Nazi's
- Nazi's gave benefits to women with children
How did war affect women?
- more women workers/more children (men dieing)
- Rationing, bombing, absent husbands
- didn't want to have children in dangerous times
- Nazi's urged women to have children out of wedlock.
When in 1943 war went badly
- 3 million women were called up
Hitler had a theory that after the war, men could have two wives due to lack of men. Many other crazy laws were proposed.
