The Hitler Youth
- wanted to turn the young into loyal Nazis
- formed in the 1920's
- by 1936 it was impossible not to join
- Reich Youth Leader, Baldur con Schirach
League of German Maidens
- less important, because females weren't in the army
- however, the had to do similar activities as boys
Hitler Youth gave:
- objective in life
- loyalty to Nazi's
- Pride
- It brainwashed and made puppets
- instilled hatred of jews
- instilled Nazi ideology
Examples of activities
- Physical tests
- Propaganda movies/literature
- model making
- parades
Were children indoctrinated at school?
- non-nazi teachers were sacked. (all teachers had to be part of the Nazi teachers association)
- there were teachers camps concentrating on techniques of indoctirination and Physical Education
The Nazi Curriculum
- PE - compulsory, you had to do well, or you were expelled
- History - Rise of Nazi party, injustices of Treaty of Versaille, Evils of Jews and communists
- Biology - Aryan science
- German - National Identity
- Geography - Lebensraum (living space)
- Religious Studies - in 1937 the subject could be dropped
- Domestic Science - for girls
Leadership Schools
- The best students went to these
- it was controlled by the SS
- trained future chiefs for the government and army
- Adolf Hitler Schools gave a military style education
- There was a general fall in academic standards
Jews in School
- There were made an example of
- they were bullied, even by teachers
- eventually they were not allowed to attend school.
