President Woodrow Wilson - USA
- Idealistic
- wanted a better and safer world
His 14 points included
- There should be no secret treaties; all international agreements should be open.
- Armaments should be reduced
- Principle of Self Determintation
- Poland should be indipendant from Russia, and should have a coastline.
- The League of Nations should be set up.
Prime Minister Lloyd George - Britain
- Saw the danger of punishing Germany too harshly
- Had promised British people hw would make Germany pay
- Disagreed with point 2 of 14 pts. - he didn't want free seas
President Clemenceau - France
- Seen his country invaded twice, in 1870(Franco-Prussian war) and 1914 (WW1)
- Wanted revenge
- wanted compensation
- wanted Germany crippled
- Wilsons ideals didn't appeal to him
(Note: When Germany asked for armistace, they thought the treaty would be based on the 14 points.)
Conditions under which peace makers were working
- Flue epidemic (killed more people than the war)
- Kaiser had abdicated - new government - not stable
- Commnists tried to seize power in Germany and Hungary
- Eastern Europe - people taken law into their own hands - setting up own states before the treaty gave them right to
- Conference was held in Paris, amid all destruction
All these cirumstances lead to the haste and harshness of the Treaty.
