Energy Transfer by Heating

Heating is a form of energy transfer
Conduction
- through solids
- atoms at hot end vibrate. Electrons colide. Atoms bump into atoms next to them and make them vibrate.
- good conductors because atoms are close together.
- conductors absorb heat
- insulators prevent heat from being absorbed
- Liquids and gasses don't conduct heat as well, because particles are far appart.
Convection
- occurs in liquids and gasses
- hot air rise, cold air sinks
- in a cycle
Radiation
- Transfer of heat by waves
- dark objects absorb heat
- light objects reflect heat
Heating is measured in terms of change in temperature
Specific heat capacity - how much energy is needed to change a substances temperature
- Energy needed to heat a substance = specific heat capacity x mass x change in temperature
- =xJ
Latent heat is the energy needed to change the state of matter.
