Heating is a form of energy transfer

Conduction

  • through solids
    • atoms at hot end vibrate. Electrons colide. Atoms bump into atoms next to them and make them vibrate.
    • good conductors because atoms are close together.
    • conductors absorb heat
    • insulators prevent heat from being absorbed
  • Liquids and gasses don't conduct heat as well, because particles are far appart.

Convection

  • occurs in liquids and gasses
  • hot air rise, cold air sinks
  • in a cycle

Radiation

  • Transfer of heat by waves
  • dark objects absorb heat
  • light objects reflect heat

Heating is measured in terms of change in temperature

Specific heat capacity - how much energy is needed to change a substances temperature

  • Energy needed to heat a substance = specific heat capacity x mass x change in temperature
  • =xJ

Latent heat is the energy needed to change the state of matter.
