Light

  • Is the movement of electrons
  • we see things because light rays bounce off objects into our eyes.
  • Light travels in straight lines
  • Principle of least time - tates light takes the path that requires the shortest time to travel
  • Angle if incidence = angle of relection (angle going in = angle coming out)

A virtual image is an image that cannot be projected onto a screeen

Curved Mirrors

  • Concave
    • A wider area reflected into a smaller space
    • Example: (
  • Convex
    • Shop mirrors to see around corner.
    • Example: )

Refraction

  • The bending og lgit when it enters a denser material.
  • Light travels slower in a denser material
  • Light refracts as it slows down.
  • Rules:
    • Rays of light entering a denser material bend towards the normal line
    • Rays of light entering a less dense material bend about from the normal line
    • Angle entering = angle exiting

Electromagnetic Spectrum

  • They transfer energy
  • can all be reflected, refracted or diffractred
  • travel through a vacuum at the same speed
  • travel at 300,000,000 m/s (speed of light) in vacuum
  • Shorter wavelength, higher frequency, the more dangerous a wave is

You should know the spectrum, check over images of it in your books. Or check this link:www.yorku.ca/eye/spectru.htm

Seismic Waves

  • S waves: Transverse, only travel through solid rock, not liquids
  • L Waves: Travel along the earths crust
  • P waves: Longitidinal, travel through solids and liquids
  • S & P waves travel faster through denser material.
