Kinetic Theory of Matter (movement of particles)
- Element: made of one type of atom
- Mixture: more than one element mixed together in any proportions, and keep its own properties, and can be seperated
- Molecule: more than one atom combined
- Compound: More than one atom chemically combined in fixed proportions. Properties can change, and it can't be seperated physically.
Solid
- Strong bonds
- move in fixed positions
- volume and shape constant
Liquid
- Weaker bonds
- can move, not far
- constant volume
- takes shape of container
Gas
- very weak bonds
- can move freely
- takes volume of container
- no shape
Density = mass/volume
finding irregular shaped density
- water, pan balance, measure displacement
finding density of regular shape
- Top pan balance, LxWxH
Pressure = force/area
Gas Laws
- Charles Law - Temperature increases, volume increases
- Boyles Law - Pressure increase, volume decreases
- Pressure Law - Pressure increases, temperature increases
-273 C is absolute zero or 0 Kelvins, this is when particles stop vibrating
