Your reading and writing skills will be tested on both the Language exam papers; you will have to respond to fiction and non-fiction and media texts.
You must be able to:
-
Read and analyse different types of media; leaflets, newspaper, magazine and web articles, non-fiction texts (e.g. travel writing and biographies, etc).
-
Follow an argument and distinguish between facts and opinions, understanding why things are presented in a particular way (e.g. to persuade, inform, argue, entertain, etc).
-
To extract information from all kinds of texts and then be able to use that information.
-
Understand how writers use language to achieve different effects and also be able to comment on that language, identifying techniques and their intended effect on the reader (support what you say with textual evidence, where necessary.)
-
To write in different ways for different purposes coherently, using paragraphs and punctuating your work. (e.g. imaginative, argumentative, personal and persuasive writing, etc).
-
To use a wide range of vocabulary. Be precise and clear using standard English. Leave time to check your work thoroughly.
