INDUSTRY

Over half of Britain's workforce is engaged in farming.

The wool industry is Britain's second most important industry.

Britain's biggest industries are iron & steel, coal & textiles.

The estimated coal production is 2.5 million tons per year.

Coal production now stands at 225.2 million tons per year.

The estimated iron production is 24,000 tons per year.

Iron production now stands at 8.96 million tons per year.

The wool industry uses the domestic system.

Most industries use factories instead of the domestic system.

POWER

Large machines are driven by water power.

Steam power is used to run machinery in factories & workshops.

Mines are drained by horse power & farm machinery is pulled by oxen or horses.

Farm machinery is still pulled by horses.

TRANSPORT

There are no railways.

The railway network links most of Britain's towns and villages.

Water transport by river & sea is used for bulky goods.

Industry mostly uses rail transport instead of water transport.

Passengers usually walk or travel by wagon. This is slow & dangerous.

Passengers mostly use railways instead of road.

To travel from Liverpool to London by road takes 3-4 days in reasonable weather.

To travel from Liverpool to London by train takes 4 hours & 15 minutes.

INDUSTRY

Only 10% of Britain's workforce is engaged in farming.

Only about 2% of Britain's workforce is engaged in farming.

Britain's biggest industries are iron & steel, coal & textiles.

Britain's biggest industry is the food industry, with television, music & cars close competitors.

Coal production now stands at 225.2 million tons per year.

Coal production is nearly non-existent due to other methods of power such as electricity and gas. Most coal collieries in England have now closed.

Iron production now stands at 8.96 million tons per year.

Iron production has decreased substantially although iron is still used to make metal alloys.

Most industries use factories instead of the domestic system.

All industries use factories and the domestic system only exists when people are employed at home, for example, to package certain items or manufacture small clothing items such as bows.

POWER

Steam power is used to run machinery in factories & workshops.

Electricity is used all around Britain both in the home & in all industries, factories and workshops. Hydro-electric dams have been built to generate electricity using water, & solar power has also proved to be successful, but also expensive.

Farm machinery is still pulled by horses.

Farm machinery now consists of motorised equipment such as combine harvesters & tractors, making farming a lot less stressful.

TRANSPORT

The railway network links most of Britain's towns and villages.

The railway network has been vastly improved & the Euro tunnel takes both passengers & cars under the English Channel to France via a high speed train - in just 30 minutes.

Industry mostly uses rail transport instead of water transport.

Industries use rail frequently & goods lorries are also used to transport goods around the country.

Passengers mostly use railways instead of road.

Passengers either travel by car, bus, train or aeroplane. Ferries are not so popular because they are slow & unreliable, although certain services, to Ireland, for example, do still run.

To travel from Liverpool to London by train takes 4 hours & 15 minutes.
