CPU Architecture And Memory

There are two types of memory:
1. Random Access Memory ( RAM )
This stores tempory files and is where software is placed when it is loaded. A part of the RAM is allocated for the 'clipboard'. This is the area that stores the information you CUT, COPY and PASTE from within programs like Microsoft Word and Excel.
RAM is volatile - this means it is erased when the computer is switched off - it is not permanent.
1. Read Only Memory ( RAM )
ROM contains a set of pre-programmed instructions. The BIOS of a computer ( the setup program that you can go into when the computer first boots up ) is stored in the ROM. ROM is not just used in computers - it is used in washing machines to store the numbered programs e.g. 1 - warm cotton wash
ROM is non-volatile - this means it is not erased when the computer is switched off - it is permanent.
It might be useful to think of ROM like a CD-ROM. You can't change the information and it is always there, i.e. it does not get erased when you take it out of the CD-ROM drive.
