BATCH PROCESSING
The following example shows how meter readings are taken and how they are used to produce electricity bills.
1. Data or information is collected off-line - not connected to the main computer system
Data is stored in a transaction file
2. Transaction file is sorted into order
Meter readings are sorted by account number
- this makes it really easy for the master file to be updated
3. Transaction file is used to update the master file
- transaction file is processed by linking and updating the master file
