Because of the symptoms you have been experiencing I am going to insert a flexible plastic tube through your penis into your bladder to relieve the pressure. It should not be painful but may feel a little uncomfortable. Do you have any questions?’ Put on apron, clean trolley, wash hands. Prepare sterile field and equipment, deposit LA jelly, don gloves. Drape penis, grasp with gauze, retract prepuce, clean with chlorhexidine – circular, then from meatus down shaft, 4 sides. Anaesthetic: lignocaine 2% 5ml, 5 min. Dip catheter in LA jelly, insert, penis vertical until lowered on encountering resistance of prostate; end of catheter, meanwhile, placed in receptacle. Inflate balloon, 1 ml – check for pain – then remaining 9ml. Attach drainage bag, replace foreskin.
