  1. Introduce, check I.D., explain: ‘To check how well you are responding to treatment, I need to take some blood from you. This will involve placing a band around your arm and then inserting a thin needle into your vein. You may feel a small scratch when this happens. It is a simple, quick and routine procedure. Do you have any questions?’

  2. WASH HANDS!

  3. Gloves

  4. Tourniquet

  5. Select vein. Gentle percussion and making and releasing fist help.

  6. Clean

  7. Retract skin inferiorly to stabilise vein, and insert needle at angle between 15 and 30 degrees.

  8. Release tourniquet

  9. Remove needle, place cotton wool, compress

  10. Fill blood bottles; dispose of needle etc

  11. Labels and blood request form

  12. Thank patient, check for questions
